One of the most common questions Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan receives at Quran Week is how anyone can be sure they are not misinterpreting the Quran. He treats it as a question as valid for him as for anyone else and gives the shortest possible answer. Allah expects two things of you in this pursuit: curiosity and humility. You need both. Curiosity asks what Allah is saying here and what the wisdom behind it is. Humility follows it with the acknowledgment that the conclusion you reached may be wrong, which turns collaborative learning, asking people who know more and continuing to read into a lifestyle rather than a one-off. Allah Placed a Light Inside You

Islam does not teach that a human being becomes trapped in permanent darkness after making a mistake. Allah placed a fitrah inside us, a natural light that can recognize truth.

Allah also sent revelation as light. When the light within the human being connects with the light of Allah’s words, it becomes light upon light.

Your mistakes do not mean that every trace of goodness has disappeared. They are a reminder to return to Allah, reconnect with His guidance and seek the One who placed that light within you.

In this clip from our Deeper Look series of Surah Al-Jinn, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan unpacks one of the most sobering Ayahs in the Quran: وَكَذَٰلِكَ جَعَلْنَا لِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ عَدُوًّا شَيَاطِينَ الْإِنْسِ وَالْجِنِّ يُوحِي بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍ زُخْرُفَ الْقَوْلِ غُرُورًا ۚ وَلَوْ شَاءَ رَبُّكَ مَا فَعَلُوهُ ۖ فَذَرْهُمْ وَمَا يَفْتَرُونَ (6:112). Allah tells us that for every Prophet, He appointed enemies from among humans and jinn, devils who inspire one another, beautify evil deeds for each other and work in coordination. Some humans become so consumed by evil that Allah Himself describes them not as human but as shaitaan in human form.

But the Ayah does not stop at describing that evil network. It gives a direct instruction to the Prophet ﷺ, and through him to all of us: leave them and whatever they fabricate. A person may recite Quran, make Du’aa and worship Allah, yet still feel that none of it is good enough. Then they look at someone else and think, “They are doing so much more than me.”
But constant comparison can become a trap.
Iblis compared himself and he wants human beings to become consumed by comparison too. He wants you to believe that your efforts have no value, your mistakes define you and nothing you do will ever be enough.
Allah did not create you without hope. Continue turning back to Him. Your effort, sincerity and struggle all matter.

Surah Al-Jinn quotes the jinn at length and a question came up in the session that deserves a serious answer: if those are the jinn’s words rather than Allah’s, where exactly does the miracle sit? Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan resolves it through the difference between a poet and a teacher. A poet has to be original, because the moment a line resembles someone else’s he is accused of theft. A teacher works under no such constraint. He uses whatever communicates the lesson, which means he will quote Iblis, he will quote Fir’awn and he will quote the jinn. Allah describes the Quran as عَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ (55:2), He taught the Quran, so the method is a teaching method and what is miraculous is not any single phrase but the way the whole thing teaches. Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan works through ayah six of Surah Al-Jinn, وَأَنَّهُ كَانَ رِجَالٌ مِنَ الْإِنْسِ يَعُوذُونَ بِرِجَالٍ مِنَ الْجِنِّ فَزَادُوهُمْ رَهَقًا (72:6) and the two words the ayah turns on. Ya’udhun comes from a root describing meat that clings to the bone and vines that will not come off a wall, the same word behind A’udhu billah. Rahaq describes a dog pinning its prey. Together they explain what actually happens when human beings go looking for jinn: you approach them for one thing and end up owned by them. The session moves through the narrations of Arabs calling on the master of the valley at night, the man who watched a wolf return a lamb unharmed when a shepherd called out, Ibn Kathir’s suggestion that the wolf was the jinn itself and Ibn Ashur on the humiliation that follows. Sin can appear attractive in the moment. It may promise pleasure, excitement, escape or temporary relief. But when that feeling wears off, the consequences begin to appear.
Allah created human beings with a fitrah that cannot remain at peace with spiritual poison. Addiction, gambling, uncontrolled anger and other destructive habits may offer a temporary high, but they often leave behind regret, fear, shame and lasting damage.
The guidance of the Quran protects us from choices that may feel good for a moment but wound the soul afterward.

In this Khutbah Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan opens up Surah An-Nisa (4:135), a verse he calls a complete curriculum on justice packed into a single phrase. He begins with the context: this was early Medina, a state of emergency, Muslims outnumbered and under constant threat, yet Allah chose that moment to reveal detailed family law. Why? Because a nation that cannot protect justice inside its own homes will never withstand the threats coming from outside. Strength begins with the individual and the family, not the battlefield.

From there he walks through the language of the verse word by word: the difference between merely claiming faith and truly living it, why Allah says be people of justice rather than become them, and why He ties justice directly to testimony given for His sake alone. The hardest test is not standing against distant injustice, but against your own father, spouse, sibling or family when they are wrong.

Adam (AS) made the first human mistake before any human being had experienced what comes after disobedience.
He had not yet learned the words of repentance or how to return to Allah after failure. All he knew was that he had disobeyed Allah’s command. The shame, guilt, fear and confusion must have felt overwhelming.
Many people experience the same fear after sin: am I finished, and is there any way back? But Allah teaches us that a mistake does not have to become the end of our story. It can become the beginning of a sincere return to Him.
