The Realm of Barzakh is the unseen, intermediate state where the human soul resides after physical death until the Day of Resurrection. The word Barzakh literally translates to “barrier,” “partition,” or “isthmus,” serving as a boundary that prevents the dead from returning to the physical world (Dunya) and keeps them from entering the final afterlife (Akhirah) ahead of time. It functions on completely different dimensions of time and space. For a righteous soul, centuries can feel like a brief nap, whereas a wrongdoer experiences every agonising second. Souls in Barzakh are fully conscious. They can hear the footsteps of those walking away from their graves, reunite with predeceased family members, and receive updates about the deeds of the living.

Suhayb Ar-Rumi (R) escaped Makkah by completely trading his vast worldly wealth to the Quraysh in exchange for his safe passage to Madina. This profound sacrifice during the Hijrah (migration) earned him a legendary status in Islamic history. When the Prophet Muhammad (S) permitted the Muslims to migrate, Suhayb was determined to leave. However, because he was a highly successful merchant, the Quraysh placed armed guards outside his house to freeze his assets and stop him. Suhayb pretended to suffer from a stomach ailment. He repeatedly walked outside to answer the call of nature until the guards let their guard down and fell asleep. He quickly slipped away into the night, armed himself with his bow, arrows, and sword, and galloped toward Madina.

The Prophet Muhammad (S), was known as a loving husband and a family man. He was known to speak frankly to his companions, both men and women, when they asked him about matters of a sexual nature. For example, his responses to questions included such wise advice as, “None of you should fall upon his wife like an animal; let there be a ‘messenger’ between you.” “And what is a messenger?” they asked, and he replied: “Kisses and words.” Sadly within the Muslim community, there are many misunderstandings about sexuality. Many spouses neglect the right of sexual fulfilment that is owed to their spouses. They may even believe that a wife cannot be virtuous and sexual at the same time. Feeling desire does not mean that a woman is promiscuous and Prophet Muhammad S advised husbands to let their wives achieve sexual fulfilment. He spoke about the importance of foreplay and using loving words during intimacy. Sexual dissatisfaction is considered legitimate grounds for divorce on the part of either the wife or husband.

Once the body has been washed, shrouded, and prayed over, it is lowered into the grave. At this point, something unseen but very real takes place. The soul, which had been taken up, is returned to the body in a manner known only to Allah (SWT). The Prophet (SAW) said, “When a human being is laid in his grave and his companions return and he even hears their footsteps, two angels come to him and make him sit and ask him, ‘What did you say about this man, Muhammad?’ He will say, ‘I testify that he is Allah’s slave and His Apostle.’” (Bukhari). These two angels are Munkar and Nakir, and their arrival marks the beginning of fitnat al-qabr, the trial or test of the grave. This is the moment when the soul begins to face the consequences of its beliefs and actions in the worldly life.

The Prophet Muhammad’s (S) entry into Quba marks one of the most critical turning points in the Seerah, serving as the final milestone of the historic Hijrah from Makkah to Madina in 622 CE. The Prophet (S) and Abu Bakr arrived in Quba. This day effectively serves as the foundational epoch of the Islamic calendar. For days, the Ansar of Madina travelled to the outskirts every morning, waiting under the scorching sun until noon heat forced them back into their homes. A Jewish lookout was the first to spot the small caravan approaching from Makkah and shouted out to the waiting Muslims. Because most believers in Madinah had never seen the Prophet (S) before, they initially could not distinguish between him and Abu Bakr. As the sun intensified, Abu Bakr stood up to shade the Prophet (S) with his cloak. This gesture revealed the Prophet’s true identity to the cheering crowd.

“The son of Adam will not pass away from Allah until he is asked about five things: how he lived his life, and how he utilized his youth, with what means did he earn his wealth, how did he spend his wealth, and what did he do with his knowledge.” (Tirmidhi). This Hadith portrays the situation of every human on Day of Final Verdict. Even if it has passed in answering the rest of inquiries, be it religious or social, it will not be able to enter Jannah until or unless it succeeds in giving satisfying replies to these 5 basic questions: How one Lived its Life on Earth. How one Utilized its Youth. How one Earned its Wealth. How one Spent its Wealth. What one Did with its Knowledge.

Abu Tha’labah Al Khushani (R) reports that Nabi (S) said: “…For verily ahead of you are such (difficult) days, staying steadfast on Din will be like holding onto burning cinders. Those that do good deeds in those days will receive the reward of fifty people who carry out deeds like you. ‘Abdullah ibn Mubarak (R) further states (from another teacher), It was again asked, Oh Rasulullah! Will they receive the reward of fifty people like them or fifty of us? Nabi (S) replied: ‘Fifty of you’!” (Tirmidhi and Abi Dawud). To attain this reward, you can focus on the following key principles: Actively practice the teachings of Islam and the Sunnah, even when society mocks or opposes your values. Maintain Patience: Persevere in your religious obligations and moral character when it feels isolating or difficult. Enjoin Good and Forbid Evil: Fulfil your religious duty to promote virtue and discourage vice, even when people around you prefer to follow their own desires.

This story recounts a beautiful moment during the journey of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (S) from Makkah to Madina, when he passed by a noblewoman among the Arabs, a distinguished lady from a well-respected family. This woman, although not a Muslim at the time, witnessed the noble character of the Prophet Muhammad (S), along with the signs of prophethood and the great miracles that unfolded before her eyes. What she saw compelled her to believe in him and accept his message. May Allah reward this gracious lady with the best of rewards, for she was blessed with remarkable eloquence, as she gave a precise and profound description of the Prophet Muhammad (S), a description that even the most eloquent among the Arabs could not match.

Indeed sujood is one of the most beautiful, most special and most elevating acts of worship a believer can do to His Most High Creator. We learn from the Prophetic sayings of The Last Messenger of Allah Muhammad (S) that: “A slave becomes nearest to his Lord when he is in prostration. So increase supplications while prostrating.” [Muslim]. So, this position is the nearest a believer can be to his lord. It is an act of utter humility before the Might of The Creator of Heavens and the earth and everything in between them, the King and Sustainer of the Heavens and the earth. This act of sujood achieves the utter physical submission one can do before the Creator. As The Messenger taught:“When a person prostrates, seven parts of his body prostrate: his face, his two palms, his two knees and his two feet.” [Muslim].

Abu Hurayrah (R) begins the narration by swearing an oath by Allah that his hunger was frequently so severe that he would lay flat on his stomach against the earth or tie a heavy stone to his abdomen (Hajar al-Batn) to suppress the physical spasms of starvation. He decided to sit along a main pathway where the prominent companions passed by, hoping for relief: When Abu Bakr passed, Abu Hurayrah stopped him to ask a question about a specific verse from the Qur’an. He admitted later that he already knew the verse; he only asked so Abu Bakr might notice his state and invite him to a meal. Abu Bakr answered the question and simply kept walking. Shortly after, Umar passed by. Abu Hurayrah repeated the exact same tactic, but Umar also answered the scholarly question and continued on his way. The Prophet’s Discernment: Finally, Prophet Muhammad (S) passed by, let see what happened next.
