Ejaz Chaudhry died when police officers entered his home forcibly and shot him. He suffered from schizophrenia.
A CBC News investigation has found that more than 460 people have died in encounters with police across Canada between the years 2000 and 2017, and 79% of people who died struggled with mental health issues or substance abuse or both.
Dr. Safiyyah Ally explains that police officers shouldn’t be involved, and that our mental health system is broken. She argues that more than crisis intervention teams, we need to invest in fixing our mental health system so we help people like Ejaz Chaudhry before they are in crisis.
