We laugh at accents like it’s harmless. “He sounds so village. Listen to her English. That language sounds weird.”
These comments slip out easily. Someone rolls their ‘r’ differently and suddenly they’re “less educated.” We do this so casually that no second thought or weight is attached to them. But Surah Ar-Rahman forces us to slow down. Allah says He taught the Quran. Then He says He taught human speech. The same divine act of teaching is tied to revelation and to language itself.
That changes everything.
Language is not a social accident. It’s not a cultural upgrade system where some rank higher than others. It’s something Allah enabled human beings to carry. Every accent, every tongue, and every sound is shaped by breath. When we mock someone’s way of speaking, we’re not just exposing arrogance. We’re revealing how shallow our understanding of divine teaching really is.
Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan reflects on how this subtle connection in Surah Ar-Rahman restores dignity to something we casually belittle. Maybe the problem was never the accent. Maybe it was the ego listening to it.
