Hamza followed his passion for hunting and worldly things. Whereas Muhammad S gradually distanced himself from the preoccupations of the people of his town, in order to follow what divine providence had destined for him. Even though the two men took very different paths, there remained between them a great esteem and deep respect. Hamza ibn Abd Al-Muttalib, despite their diametrically opposed outlooks on life, continued to recognize and equally appreciate the extreme loyalty, great wisdom and sincerity of his nephew, our beloved Prophet S. So much so that Hamza couldn’t stand insults to Muhammad. Hamza reacted violently when this particular situation arose. It was also on this occasion that he announced his conversion. Hamza’s conversion at first stemmed from his strong sense of family honour. For six years, Prophet Muhammed S had called people to the message of Allah while Hamzah had not paid much attention. But soon, the truth of Islam settled deeply in his heart. His love for the faith grew beyond his attachment to family, and his belief became unshakable. In time, Hamzah (RA) would be known by the noble title “Asadullah” — the Lion of Allah.
