The Quraysh tribe marched to Badr to protect a wealthy trade caravan from a Muslim interception, but commander Abu Jahl insisted on fighting even after the caravan safely escaped. The heavily armed Makkan force of 1,000 men vastly outnumbered the 313 poorly equipped Muslims, but they lost their strategic advantage when the Muslims secured the area’s main water wells first. Following the swift deaths of three top Makkan champions in the traditional opening duels, the Quraysh ranks panicked and collapsed under a fierce Muslim defense, that was aided by an army of angels. This shocking clash ended in a total Makkan defeat, costing the lives of 70 Quraysh fighters—including Abu Jahl—and resulting in 70 prisoners, which shattered Makkah’s military reputation and established Madina as a powerful new force.
