In a recent Q&A session filmed at Antwerp, Belgium, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan responds to a teacher’s heartfelt question: how do we reach students who have inherited a fearful image of God? Many grow up associating Allah with punishment, guilt or anger—often due to upbringing, cultural pressures and misunderstood religious messaging. Ustadh Nouman explains that this fear-heavy perspective often comes from teaching the outer layers of the religion while neglecting its center: the Quran itself.
Drawing insight from the story of the Prophet Luqman (AS) and his son (31:13–19), Ustadh emphasizes that a balanced and loving understanding of Allah emerges when the Quran is placed at the foundation of Islamic education. When that’s missing, even well-meaning religious advice can become overwhelming and psychologically harmful.
