The rise of the Ottoman Empire led to the fall of the Byzantine Empire, culminating in the Ottoman capture of Constantinople in 1453. This conquest ended the last remnant of the Roman Empire, allowed the Ottomans to claim Roman succession, and established their capital in the strategically important city, which they renamed Islambol. The Byzantine Empire was weakened over centuries by internal strife and constant conflict with the Ottomans, which began as small Turkish warrior states in Anatolia. The Byzantine Empire was already in a weakened state by the 14th century, weakened further by the Fourth Crusade’s sack of Constantinople in 1204. The Ottomans expanded into Anatolia from the 13th century, fighting against the Byzantines and other groups. By the late 14th century, they had become the dominant power in the Balkans. The Byzantine Empire became increasingly small, controlling only Constantinople, the Peloponnese, and a few Aegean islands, and was forced to pay tribute to the Ottomans. The Byzantines were stretched thin by conflicts on both their eastern and western fronts, and the empire’s resources were drained by internal strife and the constant need to pay for mercenaries. The Black Death also devastated urban centres and contributed to depopulation, further weakening the Byzantines.
