Abu Hurayrah (R) begins the narration by swearing an oath by Allah that his hunger was frequently so severe that he would lay flat on his stomach against the earth or tie a heavy stone to his abdomen (Hajar al-Batn) to suppress the physical spasms of starvation. He decided to sit along a main pathway where the prominent companions passed by, hoping for relief: When Abu Bakr passed, Abu Hurayrah stopped him to ask a question about a specific verse from the Qur’an. He admitted later that he already knew the verse; he only asked so Abu Bakr might notice his state and invite him to a meal. Abu Bakr answered the question and simply kept walking. Shortly after, Umar passed by. Abu Hurayrah repeated the exact same tactic, but Umar also answered the scholarly question and continued on his way.
