There’s an ayah many Muslims hold onto as a personal mantra: وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ (53:39). The human being will get nothing except what they strive for. It sounds like a promise that sincere effort will be rewarded with results. But what happens when you give your best and still come up short, when the door doesn’t open, when the answer is no?
In this Q&A from Ramadan Day 21 on Bayyinah TV Live, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan responds to a viewer who took this ayah as their guiding light and now feels lost, betrayed and shaken in their iman. He explains why the verse was never a worldly success formula. The world measures you by accomplishment and outcome. Allah measures you by your striving itself.
This is a reflection on effort, disappointment and what your sincerity is actually worth in the sight of Him who sees what no one else does.
