The Prophet Muhammad entered the outskirts of Madina (then called Yathrib) in 622 CE, marking the successful culmination of his migration (the Hijrah) from Makkah. He initially arrived at Quba, a village just outside the city, where he stayed for a little over a week and established the Masjid Al-Quba, the first masjid in Islamic history. He then set out for the city centre on a Friday, offering his first Jumu’ah prayer on the journey, and made his formal, triumphant entrance into Madina to great rejoicing. The occasion of the Prophet’s entry into Madina is one of the most celebrated moments in Islamic history. It marks the starting epoch of the Hijri lunar calendar, establishing the moment the early Muslim community transitioned from a mistreated group in Makkah to an independent society where they could practice and establish their faith freely.
