Abdullah ibn Salam (R) was a highly respected Jewish rabbi and scholar in Madina who possessed deep knowledge of the Torah. Before the Prophet Muhammad’s (S) migration, Abdullah had studied the scriptures extensively and recognized the signs of the final prophet foretold in Jewish texts. When the Prophet arrived in Madina, Abdullah went to meet him to verify his prophethood firsthand. He asked the Prophet a series of specific theological questions that he believed only a true prophet could answer. Upon hearing the precise answers, which the Prophet attributed to divine revelation via the Archangel Gabriel, Abdullah immediately recognized the truth and embraced Islam. The Prophet then changed his name from Al-Husayn to Abdullah, meaning “Servant of Allah.” Knowing that his conversion would shock his community, Abdullah devised a clever plan with the Prophet to reveal his new faith.
