Tha’labah ibn Abdur-Rahman was a young companion from the Ansar who deeply loved the Prophet Muhammad and frequently ran errands for him. One day, while completing a task in Madinah, a sudden gust of wind lifted a privacy curtain, causing Tha’labah to accidentally glimpse a woman bathing. Plagued by immediate, intense guilt, he convinced himself that he was a hypocrite and became terrified that divine revelation would descend to expose his sin. Unable to face the Prophet, he fled Madinah entirely and exiled himself to the desolate desert mountains. After forty days of absence, the Prophet grew worried and sent Umar ibn Al-Khattab and Salman al-Farsi to search for him. They eventually encountered local shepherds who directed them to the cliffs where a “crying boy” lived in isolation, weeping day and night and barely consuming any food. They found Tha’labah emaciated and frail, consumed by the fear that he had been condemned by Allah. Umar reassured him and gently brought him back to Madinah to see the Messenger of Allah. Let’s see what happened next.
