This event took place approximately 16 to 17 months after the Hijra. The Prophet Muhammad (S) was leading the Zuhr or Asr prayer at Masjid al-Qiblatayn when Allah revealed Surah Al-Baqarah. This revelation commanded him to turn away from Al-Aqsa Masjid in Jerusalem towards the Ka’bah in Makkah. This transition fulfilled the Prophet’s deep, unspoken yearning for the Ka’bah, which was the original sanctuary built by Prophet Ibrahim (A). The sudden command required the entire congregation to shift their orientation mid-prayer. This shift served as a profound test of faith that distinguished the true believers from the hypocrites and sceptics. Ultimately, it established a unique spiritual identity and geographical centre for the global Muslim community.
