Malik ibn Dinar (R), a notorious early drunkard who became a celebrated scholar. Deeply addicted to wine, Malik was shattered when his beloved two-year-old daughter, Fatima, suddenly passed away. One night, after passing out from extreme intoxication, he dreamed of the Day of Judgement, where a massive, terrifying black serpent—the personification of his heavy sins—chased him. He was rescued by the spirit of his late daughter, who stopped the monster and recited a Quranic verse asking if the time had finally come for his heart to submit to God. Waking up in terror and tears, Malik immediately threw away his alcohol, sincerely repented, and dedicated the rest of his life to Islamic studies, eventually becoming the grand Imam of Basra.
