In a recent lecture that took place in Genk, Belgium, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan discusses Quran and human psychology and the emotion he focuses on is trauma. He opens with a warning: this is a heavy subject, and the way our culture talks about it may be doing us more harm than good.

Ustadh Nouman challenges the foundation of Western psychology, the idea popularized by Freud that we all start broken, that your family is a prison, and that healing means freeing yourself from everyone who hurt you. He contrasts this with the Quran, where the starting point of a human being is not brokenness at all. Then he walks through the prophets, Ibrahim, Nuh, Ayyub, Yunus, and Maryam, showing that their experiences were not small trauma but extreme trauma: rejection by family, years of effort with no results, illness in their own body, public humiliation, even obeying Allah leading to pain.

The turning point is where the Quran takes you next. Every other relationship in your life is unstable and can go either way, but the one relationship that never abandons you is with Allah, and that is where real healing begins, from the outside in. Your healing is not coming from inside you.
