In this open Q&A session that took place after the lecture on “The Quran on Psychological Trauma” in Genk, Belgium, an audience member asked Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan how the Quran defines happiness. and his answer pushes back on the whole idea of chasing it.

He argues that happiness is only a feeling, and a feeling never lasts. The favorite cake makes you happy for a few seconds, then it doesn’t. Build your life around that pursuit, he warns, and your goals quietly shrink to the next beer, the next high, the next quick fix, which is no way to live. In neurological terms happiness is just a dopamine hit, and the people forever hunting it are usually the ones missing something deeper: purpose.

The real objective, he explains, is not happiness but satisfaction. He walks through the Quran’s use of the word فَرَح, joy that Allah both permits and cautions against, and shows how contentment comes from living with purpose in your work, your health, your relationships and your faith. His closing challenge is simple: don’t be motivated, be driven, so you stay on target on a good day and a bad one alike.
