In this Khutbah Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan turns to the passage in Surah An Nur revealed after the slander against our mother Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, and asks a hard question: how easily do we pass along things we just heard?

He explains that a small organized group starts a scandal, but careless people are the ones who spread it. That includes people who only say “I hope it’s not true.” Drawing on the meaning of the word ifk, he shows how facts can be gently bent toward a lie while the speaker claims to have said nothing at all.

He also explains why Allah demands four witnesses and calls anyone who cannot produce them a liar. Every participant, whether for five seconds or thirty minutes, receives their exact share of the sin. In an age where salacious content earns views, Allah’s warning still stands: وَتَحْسَبُونَهُۥ هَيِّنًا وَهُوَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ عَظِيمٌ (24:15).
