The preparations for the Battle of Uhud began immediately after the Quraysh’s humiliating defeat at Badr, as Abu Sufyan spearheaded a massive fundraising campaign by confiscating the profits of the caravan that had narrowly escaped the previous year. With these funds, the Makkans assembled a formidable coalition of 3,000 seasoned warriors, securing 200 horses for an elite cavalry division led by Khalid ibn al-Walid and gathering 3,000 camels to handle logistics for the long march to Madina. On the other side, upon receiving early intelligence of the Makkan advance from his uncle Abbas, Prophet Muhammad (S) rapidly mobilized Madina’s defences, initially planning a secure urban defence before deferring to his younger, enthusiastic companions who favoured meeting the enemy in the open. Ultimately, the Prophet marched out with roughly 1,000 men, though his forces were depleted to 700 just before the encounter when Abdullah ibn Ubayy and 300 hypocrites deserted the ranks, forcing the remaining Muslims to quickly establish a defensive foothold at the base of Mount Uhud.
