Originally the direction of the Qiblah was towards Jerusalem, then changed to Makkah. One of the main misconceptions is that some consider Jerusalem as a ‘Haram’. It is not a ‘Haram’ from a legal perspective, though it is still a blessed land. In reality, there are only two ‘Harams’ which is the city of Makkah and Madinah.
Now with this comes both a theological and political sensitivity. The theological sensitivity is when we say that the Ka’aba is now the main Qiblah, and the group that sanctifies Al-Aqsa more than we do (The Bani Israel), they will feel a sense of being slighted. They will feel that their holy land is being taken away, which happened during the time of the Prophet(S).
