A companion had been found guilty. The case was closed. The witnesses were there. It wasn’t slander or rumour, it was fact.
And still, when someone pointed him out to the Prophet ﷺ, he said: “If you had covered him with your own clothing, it would have been better for you.”
When people began talking about him, the Prophet ﷺ redirected: “They must be talking about someone else.” He didn’t want that conversation to continue.
This is Sunnah. Not just silence, active protection of your brother’s dignity. Even when he’s wrong.
