There is a point where a person is no longer just following their desires. They begin worshiping them.

The Quran describes someone who once had the right idea of Allah, the right words, the right religious language and maybe even the right outward practices. But somewhere along the way, Allah was pushed out of the center and their feelings took His place. What they want, what they feel, what hurt them, what offended them and what their ego demands becomes the new authority.

That is why knowledge alone does not save a person in this state. You can show them the evidence. You can remind them of an ayah. You can make the truth as clear as day and it still makes no difference because the problem was never a lack of information. The problem is that their feelings have become too sacred to question.

The Quran then paints a terrifying picture: hearing sealed, heart sealed and sight covered. A person can hear the most powerful reminder and not hear it. They can see the damage they are causing and not stop. They can run toward their own destruction while still insisting they are right because every warning has to pass through the god of their feelings first.

This is how desire starts wearing a religious mask. A person can quote Quran, say Alhamdulillah, use Islamic language and still be using religion to decorate what their ego already decided.

And the warning goes both ways. We have to protect ourselves from becoming this person by constantly returning to what Allah actually says, not what we wish He said. But we also have to remember that some people are not ours to fix. When a person reaches a point where only Allah can turn them back, you stop destroying yourself trying to guide what Allah has not placed in your hands.

May Allah protect us from worshiping our own feelings while thinking we are still worshiping Him.
