Why didn’t Allah simply establish the Kaaba as the direction of prayer from the beginning? Why the detour through Jerusalem? In this episode, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan takes Surah Al-Baqarah (2:143) apart piece by piece to reveal the answer: the entire exercise was a test of loyalties.
Following the Prophet ﷺ is easy when it aligns with your culture, your family and your sense of normal. The real question is what happens when it doesn’t. Allah wanted to distinguish those who follow the Messenger from those who turn back on their heels, a phrase meaning not just retreat, but returning to the way things used to be. Ustadh Nouman explores how this plays out in our own lives: the social pressure, the family disapproval, the loss of status that can come from genuine commitment to Allah’s guidance.
The passage ends not with a warning but with a promise, Allah will not let your faith go to waste, even when everything else is lost.
