In this clip from the Deeper Look series on Surah Al-Jinn, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan works through one of the most searching Ayat in the Surah (72:16).
The word ghadaqa points to water so abundant that it revives a whole landscape; in classical Arabic thought water stood for everything that makes civilization possible. Then comes the turn. That same abundance is given as a test rather than a reward, so a community faithful to revelation may prosper and then watch the next generation take all of it for granted.
He traces the word tariqa back to taraiq earlier in the Surah, which points to the original road of Ibrahim (AS) that Makkah had long abandoned; he then brings it into the present with what he has seen in American Muslim communities over two decades. He closes on the poets who wrote one way before Islam and an entirely different way after.
