In this Q&A session after the lecture on “Quran on Psychological Trauma” in Genk, Belgium, Nouman Ali Khan answers two questions from a young father: how do you keep family ties intact while still standing up against wrong, and how do you raise children, especially daughters, in the West?
On the first, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan turns to وَلَوْ عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَوِ الْوَالِدَيْنِ وَالْأَقْرَبِينَ (4:135). We do not cut family ties, but we do draw clear lines. Justice comes before feelings, even against yourself, your parents or your closest relatives. Twisting your words or avoiding the conversation altogether is still injustice.
On the second, he makes the case that Islamic education has spent too long on the what and the how while skipping the why. Children stop asking how to pray around age ten and start asking why, and parents can only give what they actually carry themselves.
