In Islam, engaging in a “haram” (forbidden) relationship is considered a major sin, while marriage (“nikah”) is the only permissible path for a romantic or sexual relationship. If two people have been in a haram relationship and wish to marry, the process involves sincere repentance and following the proper Islamic guidelines for marriage. If, after genuine repentance, both individuals still wish to be together, the solution is to pursue marriage in the proper Islamic way. This involves: Involving the Wali (guardian): The man should propose to the woman through her wali (typically her father or another male guardian). Following Shari’ah requirements: The marriage contract (nikah) must be conducted according to Islamic law, which includes the presence of witnesses and a dowry (mahr). Pure Intentions: The intention for marriage should be to please Allah and live a righteous life together, not just to legalize a pre-existing haram situation without genuine change.
