In Islam, the “date” or appointed time of death (Ajal) is a fundamental concept of faith, believed to be predetermined by Allah for every living soul. A person’s date of death is written by an angel while they are still in their mother’s womb. This time is fixed and will not be delayed or brought forward by even a second when it arrives. This specific angel is tasked with seizing the soul at the exact decreed moment. While often called Azrael in popular tradition, he is primarily referred to in the Quran and authentic Hadith as Malak al-Mawt. No person knows the exact time or place of their death. Even the Angel of Death is said to only learn of a person’s specific time when ordered by Allah to seize the soul. Believers are encouraged to live in a state of constant obedience and to resort to immediate repentance (Tawbah) if they sin, ensuring they are prepared whenever the Angel of Death arrives.
