Salaah is Programming towards Righteousness – Dr Zakir Naik

The second pillar of Islam it is Salaah. And normally people translate Salaah into English as prayers. To pray means to beseech, to ask for help.
I personally don’t think that Prayer is the correct translation of the Arabic word Salaah. Because to pray means to beseech, to ask for help. In our Salaah besides asking for help from almighty God, we are also praising Him. At the same time we are getting benefit from Allah (swt), from almighty God we are getting guidance. That’s the reason I personally prefer calling prayer a sought of programming towards righteousness for example.
If after surah Fathia the Imam, he may recite
Surah Maidah ch. no. 5 verse no. 90 which says
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا
“O you have believe”
إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَيْسِرُ
“Most certainly intoxicants and gambling”
وَالْأَنصَابُ وَالْأَزْلَامُ
“Dedications of stones, divination of arrows”
رِجْسٌ مِّنْ عَمَلِ الشَّيْطَانِ
“These are satan’s handiwork”
فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
“Abstain from this handiwork that you may prosper”
Here we are been programmed we are been guided by Allah (swt), that Alcohol is prohibited, Gambling is prohibited, fortune telling is prohibited, idol worshipping is prohibited. We are being programmed towards righteousness.
And Allah says in the Quran in Surah Ankaboot Ch 29 verse 45
اتْلُ مَا أُوحِيَ إِلَيْكَ مِنَ الْكِتَابِ وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ ۖ إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ تَنْهَىٰ عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنكَرِ
That “Recite of that which We have reveled to thee, by inspiration and establish regular prayers for verily prayer restrain you from shameful and unjust deeds.”
The Quran says that prayer restrains you from shameful and unjust deeds.
Therefore I prefer calling sallah rather than prayers as programming towards righteousness.
Or in lay mans terminology it’s called as brain washing.
But normally when here the Aadan and somebody ask’s where are you going? And if you say I am going for brain washing, it sounds a bit odd.
So I have got no objection if someone uses the English word prayer for the Arabic sallah. But I would like to remind them that it is not the appropriate translation.
Similarly when I say that Allah is the correct word God is not the appropriate translation but if someone uses God for Allah, when they are speaking to Non Muslims like what I am doing today, when I use the word God for Allah I have got no objection but I would like to remind them that God is not the appropriate translation of the Arabic word Allah.
Similarly prayer is not the appropriate translation of the Arabic word Salah
