Tawaaf – Circumambulation around the Ka’bah
Tawaaf includes seven circuits around the Ka’bah. Raml, walking quickly, is recommended in the first three rounds. After Tawaaf one must offer two Raka’ahs behind Maqaam Ibraheem if possible; if he cannot do that then he may offer the prayer in any other part of the mosque.
Jaabir (ra) said: “… When we came to the Ka’bah with him (Prophet Muhammad [pbuh]), he touched the corner then walked quickly (Raml) for three circuits, and walked normally for four. Then he came to the Maqaam (station) of Ibraheem and recited the verse: ‘… And thake you (people) the Maqaam of Ibraheem as a place of prayer.’(2:125) … He stood with the Maqaam between himself and the House.” Ja’far bin Muhammad said, “My father used to say that he (Prophet Muhammad [pbuh]) used to recite in these two Raka’ahs Qul Huwa Allaahu Ahad and Qul Yaa Ayyuhal Kaafiroon (Surah Al Ikhlaas and Surah Al Kaafiroon).”
