Yasir Qadhi

In Episode 9 of this Ramadan series, Shaykh Yasir Qadhi explores one of the most consequential turning points in medieval history — the Battle of Manzikert.

By the 11th century, the Muslim world was undergoing major political transformation. A powerful new dynasty had emerged from the steppes of Central Asia: the Seljuk Empire. Originally Turkic nomads who entered the Islamic world and embraced Islam, the Seljuks rapidly rose to dominance, eventually controlling vast regions stretching across Persia, Iraq, and beyond.

Under the leadership of Tughril Beg, the Seljuks established themselves as defenders of the Sunni Abbasid order. His successors expanded the empire even further, culminating in the leadership of the famous Seljuk ruler Alp Arslan.

At the same time, the Byzantine Empire sought to reclaim lost territories in eastern Anatolia. Determined to halt the Seljuk advance, the Byzantine emperor Romanos IV Diogenes mobilized a massive army and marched east toward Seljuk territory.

What followed was one of the most dramatic confrontations in medieval history.

In 1071, the two armies met near the fortress town of Manzikert. Despite commanding a formidable force, the Byzantine army suffered from internal divisions, strategic miscalculations, and betrayal within its own ranks. In contrast, Alp Arslan’s forces used mobility, discipline, and tactical brilliance to outmaneuver their opponents.

The result was devastating for Byzantium.

The Byzantine army collapsed, and Emperor Romanos IV himself was captured — an event almost unheard of in imperial history. The aftermath of this defeat weakened Byzantine control over Anatolia and opened the door for Turkic Muslim migration and settlement across the region.

Over the following decades, this shift would permanently transform the political and cultural landscape of Anatolia and eventually pave the way for the rise of later Turkish dynasties, including the Ottoman Empire centuries later.

The Seljuk state itself continued to flourish under Malik-Shah I, whose reign marked the height of Seljuk political power and cultural influence across the Muslim world.
