Allah describes something happening deep inside every one of us, inside me, inside you: don’t end up chasing empty feelings that keep you from being fair. The trap is subtle. Your feelings whisper that this person deserves less, because of what they said, because of how they treated you, so surely they shouldn’t get as much as the other.
Picture a father who loves one son and is quietly annoyed with the other. Inheritance time comes, and the feeling gets in the way. This one used to massage my feet as a teenager. That one talked back to me. So one son gets the BMW, and the other gets the 1987 Hyundai, and the father tells himself it’s fine, they both got a car.
That’s exactly what Allah is warning against. Your feelings cannot get in the way of being fair. They cannot be the reason you tilt one way or the other. Justice means giving people their right even when your heart is pulling you somewhere else.
