In this short snippet from our Deeper Look Series: Surah Al-Muzzammil, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan explores the deeper reality behind idol worship in Makkah before Islam. To the Quraysh, shirk wasn’t just a matter of religion, it was the backbone of their economy and their national security.

All the tribes of Arabia placed their idols at the Ka’bah, which meant they had a vested interest in protecting Makkah. No tribe would dare attack the Quraysh, because harming them meant endangering their own gods. This created immunity for the people of Makkah that no other tribe enjoyed.

On top of that, Quraysh controlled the major trade routes of winter and summer. Their wealth and prestige grew, making them the richest and most secure tribe in Arabia.

But when RasulAllah ﷺ began calling to tawheed, it wasn’t only a religious challenge, it was seen as an economic and political threat. Idol worship had become their policy, their safety net, and their empire.
