The Tragedy of Karbala refers to the battle where Imam Husayn ibn Ali (R), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (S) stood up against a cruel ruler named Yazid I. In 680 CE, Imam Husayn, his family, and a small group of around 72 loyal followers were surrounded in the desert of Karbala, Iraq, by a massive army thousands of times larger than theirs. Imam Husayn refused to support Yazid because he believed a leader should always protect peace, justice, and the rights of the people. The ruler’s army blocked off the nearby river, leaving Imam Husayn’s camp, including young children, without water for three days in the hot desert. Despite their immense thirst and being completely outnumbered, Husayn and his companions bravely chose to stand their ground rather than surrender their values. On the tenth day of the month of Muharram, a tragic battle took place where Imam Husayn and nearly all of his male followers were slayed defending their community.
