The formal permission for Muslims to physically fight was granted shortly after the Hijrah to Madina, marking a monumental shift in the Seerah. For thirteen years in Makkah, Muslims were strictly commanded to exercise patient endurance and were forbidden from retaliating against severe persecution. The divine shift from pacifism to defensive warfare occurred with the revelation of Surah Al-Hajj, which states that permission to fight has been given to those who are being fought because they were wronged, and that Allah is competent to give them victory. Following this revelation, the Prophet (S) began sending out reconnaissance patrols and expeditions to establish Madina’s presence, eventually leading to the first major engagement at the Battle of Badr.
