In this snippet taken from a Deeper Look: Surah Al-Ahzab, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan reflects on a subtle but powerful message from Surah Al-Ahzab (33:21) and Surah Al-A’raf (7:198): when we look at the Prophet ﷺ, we must look deeply.

Allah says, “You see them looking at you, but they don’t see.” (7:198). There’s a difference between staring at someone and understanding them. That’s the mistake people made then—and still make now. Orientalist studies of the Prophet ﷺ often focus on external events and political strategies. But the Quran invites us to go beyond that. The word “fee” in “Indeed in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example” (33:21) tells us: look inside. See what moved him. What guided his actions.

Don’t study the Prophet ﷺ like an outsider. Learn to see him the way Allah invites us to—with insight, reflection and heart.
