Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-Aas relates that the Prophet (S) once recited the saying of Allah (S) regarding the dua of Ibrahim, “My Lord! They have misguided many of mankind. If anyone follows me, he is with me; but if anyone disobeys me, You are Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful” as well as the saying of Eesa (A), “If You punish them, they are Your slaves. If you forgive them, You are the Almighty, the All-Wise” The Prophet (S) then raised his hands and implored, “Oh Allah! My Ummah, My Ummah!” And he cried. Thus, Allah said: “Oh Jibril, go to Muḥammad. Even though your Lord has full knowledge, ask him: What is making you weep?” So Jibril (A) came to him and asked him. The Prophet (S) informed him about what he had said, even though Allah had full knowledge of it. Allah said: “Oh Jibril, go to Muḥammad and say: ‘Surely, we will please you in regards to your ummah, and we will not cause you grief.’” (Muslim).
