Following the Battle of Badr, Umayr ibn Wahb, a fierce opponent of Islam known as the “Satan of Quraysh,” conspired secretly with his cousin Safwan ibn Umayyah in Makkah to take out the Prophet Muhammad (S) in Madina. Grieving their losses at Badr and motivated by the capture of Umayr’s son, Safwan agreed to pay off Umayr’s debts and care for his family in exchange for the murder, prompting Umayr to poison his sword and ride out under the false pre-tense of ransoming his son. Upon his arrival at the Prophet’s masjid, a highly suspicious Umar ibn al-Khattab (R) seized Umayr and brought him before the Prophet, who bypassed Umayr’s cover story by miraculously revealing the exact, highly confidential conversation Umayr and Safwan had shared in total isolation near the Ka’bah. Recognizing that only divine intervention could have uncovered this tightly guarded secret, a stunned Umayr immediately renounced his hostility and embraced Islam on the spot, later returning to Makkah as a fearless preacher who eventually helped guide Safwan to the faith as well.
