Imam Abu ʿAbdullah Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi’ee (R) was a monumental titan of Islamic history who fundamentally revolutionized the Muslim world by creating Usul al-Fiqh (the principles of Islamic jurisprudence), establishing the first formal legal framework to unify a fractured scholarly landscape. Born a poor orphan in Gaza, he mastered both the tradition-based methodology of Medina and the rationalist reason of Baghdad, successfully synthesizing them in his foundational masterpiece, Ar-Risalah, to establish the authoritative legal hierarchy of the Qur’an, Sunnah, Ijma, and Qiyas. Revered as the Nāṣir al-Hadīth (The Defender of Prophetic Tradition) and the eponym of the Shafi’i School of Thought, he was a brilliant polymath, eloquent poet, and spiritual luminary whose intellectual legacy continues to guide hundreds of millions of Muslims worldwide today.
