Following the Battle of Uhud, neighbouring Arab tribes perceived the weakened Muslim community as an ideal target, leading to a series of opportunistic attempts to raid and destroy Madina. The first major threat came from the Banu Asad bin Khuzaymah, who attempted to mobilize a large coalition for a surprise assault, but this was swiftly neutralized by a pre-emptive Muslim strike known as the Expedition of Qatan. Shortly after, the Banu Lahyan utilized treachery rather than direct warfare, ambushing and slaying Muslim missionaries at Al-Raji to weaken the city’s leadership, while the Banu Muharib and Banu Anmar (factions of the powerful Ghatafan confederacy) began gathering forces to plunder Madina’s outskirts, forcing the defensive Expedition of Dhat al-Riqa. These persistent and scattered tribal hostilities ultimately culminated in the Battle of the Trench, where these various Bedouin tribes united into a massive, unprecedented coalition with the Makkan Quraysh and local dissident factions in a final attempt to conquer Madina.
