They had just watched the sea split open before their eyes. They had seen the staff become a snake. Allah had rescued them from centuries of bondage with signs no people before them had witnessed. Yet the very first thing Bani Israel did after crossing was turn to Musa (AS) and ask for a god they could see, a god like the ones everyone else had.
