Many Muslims living in the West have heard khutbahs about At-Tawbah 9:29 and walked away feeling that Islam commands distance, suspicion and conflict with non-Muslims. But that reading tears one Surah out of its historical context and ignores an Ayah revealed at almost the exact same time. In this Khutbah, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan unpacks the crucial difference between Surah At-Tawbah and Surah Al-Ma’idah, explaining why At-Tawbah was a closing of mercy’s door on specific peoples who waged war against the Prophet ﷺ, while Al-Ma’idah laid out something else entirely: a divine foreign policy for Muslim minorities living among non-Muslim majorities. Allah’s permission for Muslims to share meals and build families across faith lines in Al-Ma’idah (5:5) was not a footnote. It was a mandate for engagement, trust-building and honest presence in society.
The examples of Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the earliest Muslims who lived under a Christian king in Abyssinia without a single command to leave all point to the same truth: Islam is built to travel, to adapt to any culture and any century without losing itself. The question for Muslim communities in Europe and beyond is not whether to engage with society but how to do so with integrity, the way the Prophet ﷺ built credibility through character for forty years before a single Ayah was revealed.
