In Islam, lying is considered a major sin and a “poison” to the soul, heart, and society, acting as a root cause for many other moral failings. It is strongly condemned in the Qur’an and Hadith, with Prophet Muhammad describing it as a trait that leads to wickedness and, ultimately, Hellfire. Key Aspects of the Poison of Lying in Islam: Disease of the Heart: Lying is described as a sickness that, if not stopped, can grow and consume the heart, creating a state of spiritual decay. Sign of Hypocrisy (Nifaq): Persistent lying is a defining characteristic of a hypocrite. The Prophet Muhammad said: “The signs of a hypocrite are three: whenever he speaks, he tells a lie; whenever he promises, he breaks it; and whenever he is trusted, he proves dishonest”. Truthfulness is considered a cornerstone of faith and brings peace, while lying is a poisonous behaviour that destroys trust, corrupts character, and invites divine displeasure.
