Islam commands us to honor our parents, but honoring them does not mean giving them authority that Allah did not give them.
Marriage is one example. A parent may have an opinion, give advice or even disapprove, but that does not automatically make their preference the command of Allah.
Muslims sometimes confuse respect with absolute obedience. Those are not the same thing.
A mother may be unhappy with a decision you make while Allah is pleased with you, as long as you have not done anything wrong. The goal is to maintain respect, kindness and ihsan without surrendering rights that Allah has given you.
