Why are human beings on Earth in the first place? Is this world a punishment for the mistake of Adam and Eve? Are we born fundamentally broken, carrying a sin we cannot escape without someone else paying the price for us?
In this khutbah, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan explores the striking differences between the Biblical and Quranic accounts of the creation of Adam (AS) and humanity’s life on Earth. In Surah Al-Baqarah, before Adam (AS) is even created, Allah announces to the angels:
إِنِّي جَاعِلٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ خَلِيفَةً
“Indeed, I am going to place a khalifah on the Earth.” [2:30]
Humanity was therefore not accidentally exiled to Earth as a consequence of Adam (AS)’s mistake. Earth was part of Allah’s plan from the beginning, and the human being was created with both responsibility and the freedom to choose.
The Quran also presents a radically different picture of human nature. Allah knows our capacity for corruption, but He also knows a goodness and potential within the human being that even the angels did not initially understand. And when Adam (AS) and his wife made their mistake, the answer was not inherited guilt or permanent condemnation. Adam (AS) turned back to Allah, Allah accepted his tawbah, and when humanity was sent to Earth, Allah promised:
فَإِمَّا يَأْتِيَنَّكُم مِّنِّي هُدًى فَمَن تَبِعَ هُدَايَ فَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ
“Whenever guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance will have no fear, nor will they grieve.” [2:38]
This world, then, is not a prison created to punish us for someone else’s mistake. Allah describes the Earth as a place prepared for us, with the sky, rain, fruits, mountains, animals, and countless blessings to appreciate. The Akhirah is better and everlasting, but that does not mean this world is inherently evil.
And with that freedom comes responsibility. Allah closes Surah Al-Baqarah by reminding us:
لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا
“Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity.” [2:286]
In the context of the surah, this is also about the responsibilities Allah places upon us. We have been given choice, guidance, the ability to repent when we fail, and responsibilities that Allah knows we are capable of carrying.
This khutbah challenges some deeply rooted assumptions about original sin, human nature, repentance, responsibility, and what the Quran actually teaches us about why we are here.
