During this week’s live khutbah at the @israfoundation in Texas, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan discussed the topic of marriage, but perhaps in a manner that we’re not always presented with.
Beginning with a “facts don’t care about your feelings” sentiment, Ustadh Nouman emphasised the importance of honoring the truth even if it hurts, and that includes when it comes to emotionally charged topics such as marriage.
Considering it’s the most important institution we’ll ever enter, Ustadh highlights that from a Quranic lens, marriage is a contract first and foremost, and emotions come later. This is essential to understand, especially given that so many unfortunately choose to break this contract.
This is why so many ayat on the topic of divorce exist in the Quran, whereas “how to have a lovely marriage” isn’t a discussion. Allah is fully aware that we can figure out how to succeed in marriage, but the real oppression, the real detrimental effects take place when people begin to break the contract.
